The top schools in Belgravia, Knightsbridge and Chelsea are in high demand. They offer excellent facilities, and a quality education. In many cases, it helps to live nearby for a short dash on the school run. Here are just 10 schools to aim for, and 10 properties that score high marks with us.
Hans Place, London SW1X (£2.875m)
Hill House School (https://hillhouseschool.co.uk/) in Hans Place educated Prince Charles and Lily Allen. It is famous for its uniform of burgundy knickerbockers and mustard cable-knit sweaters. The founder’s wife once said that grey uniforms make grey minds. This second-floor flat on Hans Place is perfectly placed for a quick stroll to school. There are two bedrooms, both en suite in this property.
Cadogan Square, London SW1X (£3.45m)
Sussex House School https://www.sussexhouseschool.co.uk/
is a prep school for boys aged 8-13. Daniel Radcliffe was a pupil here, no doubt inspired by the school’s lavish theatrical productions. If you want to follow in his footsteps, this property in Cadogan Square would be magically close. On the first floor, it has three bedrooms, one of which has a balcony. There is also access to the garden square by separate negotiation.
Lower Sloane Street, London SW1W (£1.125m)
Garden House School (https://www.gardenhouseschool.co.uk) shares its grounds with the Royal Hospital Chelsea and spending time in the gardens is built into the curriculum. This flat on Lower Sloane Street is just around the corner. It has two bedrooms and views to Sloane Gardens.
Eaton Square, London SW1W (£1.95m)
Eaton Square School (www.eatonsquareschool.com/) is a very new school, opened in 2017. It is based in the Grade I-listed townhouse that used to be the St James’s Club at 106 Piccadilly. A short walk away, this two-bedroom, apartment has access to communal gardens, the perfect place to read and revise.
Hans Road, London SW3 (£6.5m)
Knightsbridge School (www.knightsbridgeschool.com/) is a fairly new co-educational prep school, founded in 2006. It is popular with the pupils, who are encouraged to walk to school if possible. You certainly could if you bought this three-bedroom lateral apartment. It is within minutes of the school, and is also close to Harrods.
Elvaston Place, London SW7 (£1.195m)
Lycée Francais Charles de Gaulle (http://www.lyceefrancais.org.uk) is a French government-owned school in South Kensington. The French consulate estimates that between 300,000 and 400,000 French expats live in the city, so the school is oversubscribed. It has satellite primaries nearby, too. About 10 per cent of pupils are British. This two-bedroom flat can be found a street or two away in a grand period terrace. The modishly monochrome interior feels very French and stylish.
Carysfort House, West Halkin Street, London SW1X (£3.25m)
More House (www.morehouse.org.uk) is a Catholic school that takes girls from 11-18, aiming to mould confident young women to their full academic potential. It’s a friendly school, with fewer than 300 pupils. Just around the block, this two-bedroom maisonette takes up the top two floors of an attractive, stucco-clad period building.
Chester Row, London SW1W (£4,250 per week)
Francis Holland (www.fhs-sw1.org.uk) has schools for girls in Regent’s Park and Sloane Square. The SW1 school takes pupils from 4-18. Old girls include Sienna Miller and Jemima Khan, as well as Nancy Mitford (briefly) and Joyce Grenfell. This five-bedroom family house is beautifully renovated and thoroughly modern behind its impeccable period facade.
Culford Gardens, London SW3 (£760 per week)
Marlborough Primary School (https://mpschool.co.uk) has a new building that has won a RIBA Award. Space and light make learning a delight. This nearby two-bedroom flat is also filled with natural light. It is on the second floor of an attractive period building.
Cheyne Walk, London SW3 (£1,250 per week)
The London Oratory (www.london-oratory.org/) takes boys from 7-18, although girls are admitted to the sixth form. Tony Blair, Nick Clegg and Harriet Harman all sent their children to this school, which is famous for the quality of its music. There is no catchment area, but this three-bedroom apartment in Cheyne Walk would be an easy stroll in the mornings.
