Sophie Harden, First Lot on Newmarket Heath, oil on canvas, 81x127cm

Sophie is a professional artist based on a stud in the Oxfordshire/ Northamptonshire borders. Her contemporary and fluid technique allows movement to flood the painting, from the explosive energy and grace of horses to the small details that capture a moment in time. Often using a contrast of white oil on bright background colours, Sophie works to accentuate the adaptation of light, making the viewer perceive a 3D object from often just small marks and brushstrokes.

Inspiration for Sophie’s latest collection comes from behind the scenes of racing and exploring the daily routines of thoroughbreds in training. All the preparatory work was cited at training yards in Newmarket and Lambourn. The work was sketched earlier this year providing scenes of riding out, washing off, veterinary checks and the background work that goes in to getting these horses to the track.
